Mechanism of Action
Tadalafil works by blocking the enzyme PDE5, which normally breaks down cGMP. This molecule is responsible for relaxing smooth muscle in the penile tissue. When sexual arousal triggers nitric oxide release, cGMP levels rise, allowing more blood to flow into the penis. By preventing the breakdown of cGMP, Tadalafil helps maintain this increased blood flow, making it easier to achieve and sustain an erection. The effect only occurs in the presence of sexual stimulation.
Indications
Retho-Cialis is prescribed to treat erectile dysfunction in adult men. It is also used to manage symptoms of benign prostatic hyperplasia, either on its own or along with other therapies. In some cases, it may be recommended for pulmonary arterial hypertension to support better exercise tolerance.
Contraindications
This medication should not be taken by anyone with a known allergy to Tadalafil or any ingredient in the formulation. It must not be combined with nitrate medications, as this can cause dangerous drops in blood pressure. Individuals with severe heart disease, or those who have recently experienced a heart attack or stroke, should not use Tadalafil.
Precautions
Use Tadalafil carefully if you have a history of heart problems, liver or kidney impairment, or certain inherited eye conditions such as retinitis pigmentosa. Always review your medical history and current medications with a healthcare professional before starting treatment.
Drug Interactions
Tadalafil can interact with nitrates, other PDE5 inhibitors, some blood pressure medications, and other drugs that affect cardiovascular function. These combinations can produce significant blood-pressure changes. Make sure your healthcare provider is aware of all prescription drugs, supplements, or over-the-counter products you are taking.
Dosage
Most patients begin with a 10 mg dose taken before sexual activity. Depending on response and tolerance, the dose may be reduced or increased up to 20 mg. For men who prefer daily use, a lower continuous dose—typically 2.5 mg to 5 mg—is often prescribed. Follow your healthcare provider’s directions exactly.
