How it Works (Testosterone Propionate)
Testosterone (Propha® – Testosterone) acts mainly in two ways: it attaches to androgen receptors in the body, or it converts to estradiol and activates specific estrogen receptors. Once free testosterone enters a cell, it either binds directly to the receptor or is converted into DHT through the enzyme 5-alpha reductase. These hormone-receptor interactions trigger gene activity that produces typical androgen effects.
Uses
Testosterone Propionate is prescribed for men who aren’t producing enough natural testosterone. This includes primary hypogonadism caused by testicular issues (such as injury, torsion, or removal) and secondary hypogonadism linked to low gonadotropins or damage to the pituitary or hypothalamus.
Who Should Not Use It
This medication should be avoided by anyone allergic to testosterone, men with prostate or breast cancer, people with serious liver or kidney problems, and women who are pregnant or nursing.
Precautions
Those with heart disease, liver or kidney conditions, diabetes, or a history of hormone-dependent cancers should use this product carefully and under medical guidance. Testosterone may affect mood, blood sugar, and fluid retention. Proper injection technique is important to reduce complications, and regular lab checks help ensure safe use. This product is banned in competitive sports.
Drug Interactions
Testosterone Propionate may interact with blood thinners, corticosteroids, and diabetes medications, which can impact dosing or increase side-effect risks.
Dosage Guide
Typical replacement dosing is 25–50 mg injected intramuscularly every 2–3 days. Because this ester has a short active life, consistent scheduling is important. Doctors may adjust the dose based on blood levels and treatment response.
